‘The new series is wee-yourself scary’

Yvette Fielding, 49, is back with a scary new series of Most Haunted – with a Halloween special thrown in…

- By Hannah Wright

Can we talk highlights? For Halloween, we filmed an “as-live” episode from Liverpool’s Croxteth Hall. Imagine Downton Abbey but empty and really spooky. We captured the sound of scissors cutting, and then 10 minutes later a great big pair of scissors come flying through the air. We were like, “Oh sh*t.”

Were you just a little bit scared?

It was knee-trembling, weeyourself scary. People say, “Oh, you fake it,” but we’re not going to turn off all the lights and start throwing scissors and knives around at each other, are we? It was a very frightening place.

What do you say to the sceptics?

Of course, you’re going to get your non-believers saying we fake it, and we’re used to that – but hand on heart we never have and I wouldn’t continue to do this show if we did. More and more things are happening, but of a violent nature. I sometimes think, “Why am I doing this?” but it’s like a drug – I need my fix and I can’t get enough of it.

You film with your husband Karl [Beattie] of course...

Karl is so brave; how he goes off on his own I will never know. And not only that but he’s the sexiest man alive. I fancy the pants off him and absolutely adore him, I can’t wait for him to ask me to marry him again next year when we’re going to have our vows renewed again. Last time we did it in Las Vegas, this time I think we’re going to do it in a church. And I get a new engagement ring every ten years!

What about your outfits on the show; do you get a say in them?

I’d like to wear something lovely but I can’t because I’m always climbing up ladders or I’m down in flipping disgusting cellars and it’s freezing most of the time. I end up looking like a Michelin man, and you’ve got to be careful with your underwear because if you wear the wrong trousers, people can see what knickers you’ve got on! I’d like a makeover, please. I want to look sexy – just once before I kick the bucket!

What’s the first thing you do after a long day’s filming?

I listen to Mary Poppins on the way home in the car, it helps to bring me out of things if something really frightening has happened. If it’s like four in the morning, Karl will get the hairdryer and he’ll warm the bed, and get me a hot water bottle. I’ll get into bed with a onesie on (I’m always freezing cold), then I’ll leave the light on for a bit and read a book or watch TV.

Do you worry about the spirits following you home?

I used to, but if you saw my bed you’d wet yourself – it’s a fourposter with angels carved into it. There’s no way anything’s getting near our bedroom! Also, we’ve been to church and we’ve been blessed. When there’s been an extreme case of something violent and horrific – as in the case of the upcoming series – then I do cry but then I say the Lord’s prayer a lot and I feel quite safe…
