Closer’s intrepid dater, Rebecca Twomey, falls for the perfect first date at the football

One downside to O being single is that you don’t have someone on standby to share in your passions. I have a thing for American sports, so when I heard the NFL (National Football League) was coming to London again, I almost rugby tackled my way to some tickets.

The next hurdle was who

to go with. My girl friends don’t share my love for men in shoulder pads, so I thought it would be the perfect first date. I posted a request on Facebook advertising a free ticket and a date with me. A few former flames resurfaced, but as for new potentials, the social media man pool is shallow. For your own dignity, I wouldn’t recommend doing this.

Dusting myself off from the dating pitfalls, I was about to invite an ex when I had a welcome but unexpected message from a guy I always liked. We had our first date at Twickenham stadium, picking the (winning) team to support, waving flags, shouting “touchdown” and laughing so much. We were never short of things to talk about because the football was a fab focus.

It would be nice to think I’ve found someone who enjoys what I do, so if he asks me on a second date I might suggest an ice hockey match. One upside to being single is you never know what exciting thing will happen next...
