Margot: “Real life is more insane than my films!”
A-lister Margo Robbie tells Closer about conquering Hollywood and her low-key life in London
She’s a Hollywood star S with a string of major film roles and an Oscar nomination under her belt. But despite her A-list status, Margot Robbie is refreshingly down-to-earth.
The Aussie, 27, has gone from being a Neighbours regular to playing everything from a maniacal superhero to a trophy wife, all with dark stories to tell. But Margot insists that real life – and real people, such as the disgraced and controversial ice skater, Tonya Harding, whom she plays in her current film – are more interesting than any movie character.
She says, “Real life happens to be a lot more insane than what happens in films. The most interesting thing is people and their conflicts. Everyone I know is full of contradictions. People I’m close to, people I come across. My sister is an accountant, but she’s not a stereotypical accountant. Everyone has inner conflicts that they’re wrestling with and inner tension.”
Margot shot to mainstream fame in 2014 when she starred in Wolf Of Wall Street alongside Leonardo Dicaprio and Joanna Lumley. When Closer spoke to Joanna earlier this month, she praised Margot as “amazingly brilliant”.
BIG DREAMS
Five years on, she has her own film production company, and an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for I, Tonya.
Margot says, “It’s liberating being able to be someone else. Being Australian is great, because I rarely act like myself or use my accent and putting on a different accent makes me feel like a different person. As a woman in Hollywood, I have big aims. I have a production company, I’ve just produced a film, I’m an actress and I’d love to direct. I feel that I have been able to shape my career in a way that I want to – but I’m not just waiting and hoping, I’ve had to go out after it. I feel empowered as a woman.”
LOW-KEY LIFESTYLE
Last year she took herself off the market when she married British director Tom Ackerley.
And just like her understated persona, Margot has previously admitted to enjoying a low-key lifestyle, living in Clapham, south London – with four flatmates.
She said, “For me, where you live and what you do have to be simplistic and comfortable, otherwise how are you possibly going to relax? Clapham has always felt unassuming in the sense that you’re just left alone to get on with who you are, and that’s perfect for me.”
