Spencer: “My player days are over”

The former Made In Chelsea Lothario talks marriage plans and how his new show encouraged him to propose

His philandering days are H behind him now that Spencer Matthews has found “The One” in model Vogue Williams. The reality star admits he’s grown up since his Made In Chelsea days, when he gained a reputation for cheating on ex-girlfriends, such as Louise Thompson, Lauren Hutton and Lucy Watson.

But he knew from very early on that Vogue was different. The pair met on The Jump last year, and Spencer reveals to Closer that he joked she was marriage material even back then.

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

He tells us, “I was asked what I thought of my cast mate Vogue in episode one, and I said, ‘Oh, we’ll end up getting married.’”

Fast-forward a year and Spencer, 29, and Vogue, 32, are living together in London. He popped the question on stage, after the couple watched The Lion King musical back in January.

Although Spencer spent his early 20s being the ultimate party boy, he’s not shocked by the change in himself. He says, “It’s very welcome. That part of my life is completely over. I think every man grows up some day. That’s not to say it’s not fun, but I had my time of doing exactly what I wanted, when I wanted, and now I have other responsibilities. My attitude’s changed. I’ve always hoped I’d meet someone and everything would fall into line naturally. We’re happier than ever and our families are delighted, too.”

Wedding plans are still being made, but he doesn’t feel any pressure – despite his brother James’ lavish ceremony marrying Pippa Middleton last May.

“Theirs was very private and ours probably will be as well.” He tells us, “I don’t think we’ll be broadcasting every aspect of our life. I suspect we’ll have a nice private do, maybe abroad somewhere. We have spoken about Vogue taking my surname as, when we do eventually start a family, we’d all like to have the same name. We’re just enjoying the engagement at the moment and spending the time we can together.”

POPPING THE QUESTION

It was while filming his new show Five Star Hotel – where a group of celebs run a fancy establishment – when he and co-star Lydia Bright helped a guest propose in Greece last year, that made Spencer think about his own future with Vogue.

He admits, “Proposing had crossed my mind before, but it got the clock ticking.”

It seems Vogue has done what many believed was impossible – tamed the Chelsea Lothario. So, what does she have that others didn’t? “She demands respect. She’s a real lady and my best pal,” Spencer gushes. “I’ve always thought I might end up with someone slightly older than me, and it just feels so right. My family love her arguably more than me. It’s the first time in my life I’ve ever looked at someone and thought I could easily spend the rest of my life with you. Honestly, I’ve never even considered getting engaged prior to meeting Vogue. Not once.”
