CLEVER IDEAS FOR A CHEAP DATE!

Whether you’re looking for love or just looking after your relationship, date nights are important. But they’re also expensive. We asked the experts for advice on how to bring the romance… without breaking the bank

SAVE ON EATING OUT As 49% of us agree that going out to dinner is the ideal date*, a restaurant voucher is your best friend. “Visit the restaurant’s website to look for offers”, says Holly Andrews from KIS Finance (kisbridgingloans.co.uk). “Pizza Express, Zizzi and Prezzo are some of the many chains that often have codes and offers online, while Miller & Carter offer a free glass of wine when you join their Steak Club. Sign up to your favourite restaurant’s newsletter and always check out vouchercodes.co.uk before making a reservation.”

HAVE A THEME NIGHT

“Make a night in special by organising a cheese and wine evening, a movie marathon, or plan a three-course meal with a theme”, says Clare Francis, Director of Savings at Investments At Barclays. “Say Spanish, Mexican or Indian – one of you cooks themed food while the other provides the drinks.” Or, for great savings, M&S and Tesco both do value Dine In For £10 deals, where you get a twocourse dinner and a bottle of wine. “You could also hold a games night,” adds Holly. “Pictionary, Cards Against Humanity and Articulate will keep you laughing all night. Or host your own ‘Bake Off’ night and go head to head!”

PLAY ROULETTE

“Google ‘cheap dates’ and you’ll find hundreds of sites offering ideas”, says Holly. “Get your partner to pick a number and agree you’ll do whatever idea that matches. It’s fun and you won’t have to spend a fortune.”

BOWL THEM OVER

“Head to the bowling alley for a cheap and cheerful night out,” says Holly. “Most charge about £6 per person per game, with many offering low-cost deals on certain nights, and throwing in food and drink too.”

GO DUTCH

In relationships, it usually becomes normal for one of you to pay the whole bill, but splitting it can help you both stay in charge of your finances. “When you’ve had time to get to know each other a little better, offer to split the bill”, says Clare. “Splitting a £60 dinner bill 50/50 seems a lot more manageable than one of you taking the full hit. Take your date’s budget into consideration, too.”

SEEK OUT FREE FUN

“There are hundreds of free attractions, from museums to art galleries”, says Claire. “Take a picnic and make a day of it.” Local tourist information sites list free things to do in your area, or check out the list on moneysavingexpert.com. “Getting active together is also a great way to stay fit and have a cheap date,” adds Holly. “Most gyms and dance studios will offer free taster sessions to beginners, so pick whatever you fancy – from Zumba to yoga – and get moving.”
