TEACH YOUR KIDS LIFE SKILLS

Research has found that little children who aren’t taught good habits are more likely to suffer later, Emma agrees...

y mum used to M say, “The gift of a tidy room is a tidy mind.” As a kid I thought that made no sense, but I now understand that my mum was teaching me an important lesson, one that I hope I have taught my own children. Because research suggests that kids who demonstrate self-restraint fare better as they grow up. Children who didn’t plan were more aggressive and less restrained than their more organised peers. When you think about those mornings where you can’t find your keys and you realise that the important document you were meant to finish is still half-completed, it is pretty easy to understand how a lack of planning can leave you feeling exhausted and angry. Kids need routine; it makes them feel safe and prevents them simply reacting to the world around them. Introducing some really simple routines can make a huge difference to your children’s mindsets. I have found that chalk boarding my boys’ daily routine, plans and expectations is a helpful exercise. We chalk up equipment needed, appointments and homework, so they start every day organised. Helping them to tidy their rooms can also contribute to a better mood and a more focused attitude, and that makes any parent’s life easier. Taking them out for a walk in the fresh air once a day and giving them a break from their screens can also have a huge impact. Humans like order and need structure, so make sure that you create such foundations for your kids.
