6 ‘I’ll be celebrating with some fizz’

The One Show’s Alex Jones, 41, joins an impressive presenting line-up for the BBC’S royal wedding coverage

- By Hannah Wright

How excited are you about covering the royal wedding?

I’m thrilled! I covered Kate and William’s [aka the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge] wedding in 2011 as well, which was a real privilege and a treat.

What’s the atmosphere like?

It’s overwhelming… electric! People will have camped out on the streets for nights, hoping for good spots on The Long Walk in Windsor to get the best view of Meghan in the car. I think these weddings really show Britain at its best. The whole country stops what it’s doing and comes together to celebrate.

What’s your role on the day?

I will be with the crowds, getting their reaction. I imagine lots of people will come from the US, and from all parts of Britain. Windsor won’t know what’s hit it!

Are you nervous about anything?

The whole thing! Over 18million viewers watched the BBC’S coverage of Kate and William’s wedding. That’s enough to make you choke on your bacon sandwich, isn’t it?!

What will you be wearing?

It’s tricky, because you don’t know what the weather will be like – and there’s a lot of standing about so it can get quite chilly. It’s about covering all the bases; looking smart and wedding-ready! The hunt is on for the perfect outfit.

Would you be watching it anyway?

One hundred per cent, yes. I will definitely re-join my friends and family as soon as we’re done; soaking up the atmosphere with some ice-cold prosecco and strawberries.

You’re married to a New Zealander (Charlie Thomson, her husband of over two years). Does he get the royal wedding thing?

Oh, absolutely. His parents are English to the core and are big fans of the royals, so they’re actually over here for the wedding. They keep saying it’s for Charlie’s 40th, but on the sly I think it’s actually because the royal wedding happens to be around the same time. They even speak like the Queen and Prince Philip…

Ha! What will you be doing when you get home?

I’ll be carrying on with the celebrations! I’ll probably have a drink with the presenting team, then I’ll make my way home for some fizz and a barbecue.

Let us not forget that you also got married in a castle (Cardiff Castle…)!

That was the best day I can remember – apart from when Teddy (16 months) was born. Though maybe it was just slightly more low-key than Harry and Meghan’s day. It’s funny because whenever I show anyone a picture of Teddy, they go, “Oh, he looks a lot like Prince George!” No, he doesn’t, that’s just the way I dress him…
