-

If you’re good I at odd jobs and want to make a bit of extra money, then the recent success of websites like Taskrabbit.co.uk and Airtasker. co.uk could be for you. Jobs can include anything from putting up pictures to updating someone’s CV. Some of the most popular tasks are things like putting together furniture (£40 for a bunk bed) and doing the ironing (£20 for a small basket of washing) – some people will even pay you to wait in a queue for them!

CREATE AN INVITING PROFILE

“Your profile is your chance to show off your unique skill set and get people’s attention,” says Lucas London, General Manager of Airtasker UK. “Include information about your experience and personality so that people can see why you’re the right person for the task. Your profile will also include your star ratings and completion rate, so if you make sure you keep these high, you’ll be at a huge advantage.” Also, don’t forget to add a good profile photo. “Choose a well-lit headshot in colour, and make sure you’re smiling,” says Lucas.

SELL YOUR TALENTS

“Enter your skills and interests, writing a short description about what you can offer,” says Lucas. “Make a list of all your previous work experience – these are your ‘hard’ skills, like accounting, bartending, cleaning, computing or marketing. And then add your relevant ‘soft’ skills – things like being analytic or creative.”

DELIVER A GOOD PITCH

When you find a task that could be for you, you are ready to start making offers. “You can also ask questions or leave a comment before deciding whether or not to make an offer,” says Lucas. “Set up task alerts so you are the first to hear about any jobs. When you’re ready, select ‘make an offer’ and tell the potential customer why you’re the best person to complete this task. Be sure you understand exactly what they expect. It’s vital you ensure you are able to do the job properly before making an offer, or your ratings could drop if they end up disappointed.”

THINK SAFETY FIRST

While these platforms allow users to rate each other, it’s wise to be safety aware. “Don’t move your conversation to text or Whatsapp, use the official app or website to communicate and don’t give out your personal details,” says Lucas. “If you feel uneasy or suspicious, trust your instincts and report it to the business. And when it comes to taking on a task, always let someone know where you’ll be. Remember to stay contactable on your mobile.” On Airtasker, all Taskers undergo a strict identification and verification process and there is an extensive registration system. Also, providing you complete the task, you are covered by insurance, including personal injury or property damage.
