WHAT TO DO IF YOUR HOME IS AT RISK

HOMELESS CHARITY SHELTER SHARE THEIR TIPS

-

1Get expert advice early. If you’re struggling to pay your housing costs, Shelter offers a free helpline and web chat service, which is open every day of the year.

2Make paying the rent or mortgage your top priority. You can get help to deal with debts, such as credit cards, separately.

3Don’t withhold the rent, even if your home needs repairs. You can get help dealing with any maintenance issues from a housing adviser.

4Avoid borrowing money. High-interest loans could make your situation much worse very quickly.

“I think it’s okay tell a friend they’re overweight. A mate can put on a couple of pounds after a holiday, but when you see them continually getting bigger, I think it’s time to talk to them, for the sake of their health.

“Early last year, one of my male friends bluntly told me, ‘You look big, you’ve let yourself go – sort yourself out!’ I wasn’t hurt or shocked though, because I knew it was the truth.

“I was a size 14 and weighed 12 stone [at 5’ 7”], when I’m usually more like 10 stone. My weight had become the elephant in the room, and hearing his words spurred me into action.

“I cut out cakes, chocolate and wine, and started eating loads of salads, fruit and nuts. I also began doing hot yoga and hitting the gym five times a week. Within three months I’d lost two stone, and I had the confidence to dress in clothes I hadn’t worn since having my son Jaxon, three years ago. I felt fitter, and people said I looked younger too, which is always good to hear!

“When I saw the friend who’d called me out on my weight, I thanked him for telling me the truth. I’m so glad he kicked me into action. Fat shaming can be okay, so long as you trust your instinct and do it gently and constructively.”
