‘Being on Masterchef is all I’ve ever wanted’

Former Made In Chelsea star and dad-to-be Spencer Matthews, 30, is putting his cooking skills to the test on Celebrity Masterchef – which happens to be his fave TV show

- By Hannah Wright

We hear you really love Masterchef? It’s my favourite show and I’m extremely excited to take part! Actually, since I became involved in television, it’s all I’ve ever wanted to do. I’m a massive fan of Gregg Wallace and John Torode and cooking for them was just a joy. Was it very stressful? I’m a relatively stress-free person and I really enjoyed it. It’s strange, because when you watch Masterchef, you think, “They couldn’t possibly finish everything in the last second” – but it is like that! Even if you’re not used to managing your time quite so strictly, it really does end up being down to the wire. Did you practise a lot? It depended on the round – sometimes you had a bit of notice, sometimes none at all. Being the competitive person that I am, I took the opportunity to learn how to cook things I would normally never dream of cooking before. I lent on friends who were better chefs than me, and Vogue [Spencer married model Vogue Williams in June] cooks very well. How confident are you in terms of reaching the final? It’s difficult to say, but I’m quietly confident and one thing I can assure viewers is that I will give it 100 per cent. What I can say is that I was the messiest chef in Masterchef history, but it was because of my passion for the food and setting myself large, unobtainable goals. There was no time to clean! What would you usually rustle up for you and Vogue at home? Vogue and I spend a surprising amount of time at home. We are very comfortable with each other and are best friends, so I think for a special occasion we would actually go out. Vogue would probably say that my speciality is breakfast – I’d make something like pan-friend halloumi and eggs on toast with avocado. How are you feeling about becoming parents [their first child, a boy, is due this month]? We’re extremely excited. It’s an absolute blessing and we both can’t wait to be parents. We’ve never got on better, not that we were ever not close, but the baby has definitely brought us closer together and we’re having so much fun with the preparation. Vogue is also going to go down in history as the most beautiful pregnant person in the world. Are you ready for the arrival? We’re nearly done with the nursery now, and we feel we’re really organised with it, but you never know what can happen… Let’s hope the big day doesn’t arrive before Masterchef airs, or you’ll have no time to watch it! Masterchef is the only thing that I’ve ever been in that I will watch! Do you put extra effort into your appearance, being on TV? I think with growing older, health and fitness are really important – along with partying less, especially with impending fatherhood around the corner! You’ve just turned 30! Happy birthday! My lovely wife organised a gettogether that I wasn’t meant to know about, but somebody let the cat out of the bag. But next year will be the best on record!
