STOP SELFIES MAKING YOU FEEL ‘UGLY’ BODY IMAGE

New research says photo-editing has made physical “perfection” seem normal, knocking our self-esteem. Emma advises…

- YOUR GUIDE TO EMOTIONAL ISSUES AND FAMILY LIFE WITH PSYCHOLOGIST EMMA KENNY

For decades we’ve F been bombarded with “perfect” bodies on TV and in films. Now even “normal” people put unrealistic images all over social media. New research has revealed that this spread of photo-editing technology has normalised perfection to the extent that we’re all feeling the pressure to attain the unattainable. We’ve become obsessed with our perceived flaws in our quest to fight against Mother Nature, stop the ageing process and compete with the “body perfect”. The first way to fight back? Stop looking! We’ve become addicted to the lure of social media, so whenever you’re at a loose end, rather than instinctively going online, do something that will leave you feeling more fulfilled. Call a friend, listen to your favourite track, read, practise some mindfulness – it doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you feel happy.

Next, take a reality check. Look at the people around you and recognise that the distorted images on social media do not reflect reality. The people in your life who matter are fully aware of what you look like, so why present a false image online? If someone you know insists on posting endless doctored images, unfollow them. Instead of obsessing over flaws, reflect on everything you’re grateful for. Your body tells the story of your life, so don’t be ashamed of it. Celebrate all the amazing things your body has brought to your life. Health, happiness and loved ones matter, wrinkles don’t.
