How much do you really dislike country life?

I don’t fully dislike it – the problem with Steve and Nicky’s situation is that they probably would like the country, but they bought the wrong house in the wrong place and that’s what made it frustrating.

Have you spent much time in the countryside?

I’ve got a place in the country – in West Sussex – and I grew up in the country as well so I understand it. It’s nice to have a place in London because I work there, but it’s lovely to be able to split my time between the two.

Do you make jam?

I’m very like that. My mum was an incredible cook and we never bought jam or marmalade or any of those things when I was a kid. It’s a very natural thing for me to not waste what’s in the garden and to grow my own vegetables and herbs if I can. I’m very pleased to tell you that I managed to grow figs, and my daughter showed me how to make fig leaf ice cream – which I was very pleased with it.

You character Steve is not very handy around the house – how are you at DIY?

I am sadly more like Steve than I would like to admit! I’m genuinely not very good at it – to the extent I’m not really allowed to have a go any more at home...

When you’re in your country pile, do you wear the same sort of clothes as Steve?

My real wardrobe isn’t as motheaten as Steve’s in this series! To be honest, I quite knowingly chose my wardrobe to be as comfortable as possible because in the first series I had us going out into the garden in our pyjamas. Now, if they go outside, they grab their coats first!
