Posh feels “so low” after David’s latest scandal

As David Beckham is shamed after escaping speeding charges, sources say the backlash has put more strain on his marriage to Victoria

- By Lily Smith

They’ve had T a tough few months, with intense speculation over the state of their marriage. And last week, the Beckhams came under fire once again when David faced an onslaught of criticism after being cleared of speeding charges when his lawyer got him off on a technicality.

The ex-footballer, 43, was caught driving at 59mph in a 40mph zone in January this year, but because the legal papers were served a day late, David’s lawyer Nick Freeman – nicknamed Mr Loophole due to his reputation for helping celebs escape prosecution – was able to avoid the conviction. Speaking after the verdict, David issued a statement, saying, “I am very relieved and very happy with my legal team”.

DISAPPOINTING

But fans unleashed outrage on social media, slamming David for hiring Mr Loophole and for dodging the charge. One wrote, “This man is an absolute disgrace”, while another said, “David Beckham, what if you had hit a child… You should be ashamed of yourself”.

Road safety charities joined the furore, with Joshua Harris from Brake saying, “It is hugely disappointing to see a role model like David Beckham shirking his responsibility”. Claire Armstrong, of the Safe Speed Campaign, added, “This says that if you have enough money you can lead a different life to everyone else.”

Further antagonising critics, David, who wasn’t present at court, posted a picture of himself sitting in a car with the caption “London Traffic” and an angry emoji during the trial – although he has since deleted this. And after getting off his speeding charge, he was seen enjoying a romantic dinner in Paris with wife Victoria, splashing out on a bottle of wine worth £1,300, before jetting out of the city on a private plane.

Meanwhile, Posh, 44, faced her own backlash last week when Spice Girls fans called for her to stop being a “b***h” and reunite with her former bandmates. Mel B uploaded a picture of her Facetiming bandmates Emma Bunton, Mel C and Geri Halliwell – weeks after the girls announced they’d be reuniting without Posh. Fans vented their frustration at Posh’s absence, writing, “Stop being that

**** b and join the girls”, and “I wish @victoriabeckham would stop acting like she doesn’t have a past #girlpower.”

TENSION

And sources say that after speculation over her marriage, and mockery over her recent Vogue photo shoot, David and Posh have faced the toughest few months ever, with the continued backlash causing tension between them.

A source says, “Vic is feeling low after yet another bout of criticism – it’s been so tough for them recently. There’s tension between her and David too, because she doesn’t want them to make headlines over anything negative. She feels people are always ready to take a pop at her and David and now this has made everything worse.”

But despite the criticism, insiders say Posh is determined to regain her popularity.

The source adds, “She wants to throw herself into charitable work with David and keep out of drama so that they can get back in the public’s good books.”
