YOU REALLY CAN MAKE EVERY DAY HAPPIER

The UK is only ranked the 19th happiest nation in the world, but Emma says there are lots of ways to boost your mood

When I ask clients what they want from therapy, they often reply, “I just want to be happy.” What I tell them never changes – you can’t really find happiness, it comes to you as a by-product of the things you do. A recent survey revealed the 40 greatest ways people feel “super”. The top ten included simple things like a hug, the sun shining and seeing a close friend. Research has also shown that to be happier, you need to include several elements into your daily life. Just seven minutes of exercise improves and sustains mood, and people who get a good night’s sleep deal better with negativity, so make your bedroom zen and cut out late nights. Spend time with those you love, and who fully accept you, because this causes your brain to release chemicals that make you feel valued and safe.

Another cheap, quick and effective mood booster is getting out into nature. Spending an hour walking, gardening, or running can transform your mental state. Also, pursuing your passions is a sure-fire way to feel good. Stop saying, “I’ll start next week.” Write a list of what you want to achieve and make a start on it. When your life is full of things you love, it’s hard not to be positive. Plan in treats as well, because having something to get excited about feels good. Finally, put pen to paper and explore what inspires you, and equally, what brings you down. It can help you to make changes to your life to ensure that happiness is a daily experience, not just a random occurrence.
