They’ve frequently dominated the headlines over the past few months, with persistent rumours their 19-year marriage is under strain. And Victoria Beckham faced fresh agony last week when her husband David admitted their marriage is “always hard work” – and that it had grown “more complicated” over time.

In an interview with an Australian TV show, the former England footballer said, “To have been married for the amount of time we have, it’s always hard work. It becomes a little bit more complicated.”

Fans were quick to react to David’s admission, with one posting online, “He’s never made comments like this before. Maybe he’s preparing for a split.” Another added, “It really sounds like they’re laying the groundwork for a divorce announcement. This is the kind of thing you keep to yourselves.”

BLINDSIDED

Now insiders say Posh – who revealed on Instagram last week that she’d checked into a wellness retreat in Germany – was left blindsided by his comments. A source says, “Vic was hurt and felt humiliated. She thought the wording was careless because it fuelled further speculation their marriage was under strain. It drew attention to them for the wrong reasons. Vic feels they’ve both spent so long fighting off negative rumours over their marriage and this brought it all up again. David insisted he was just trying to be honest and relatable as all long-term relationships have their challenges. But Vic felt he didn’t consider how people would react.”

The couple have endured

constant reports of strain within their marriage in recent months, with fans claiming they have looked “miserable” together on countless occasions – including the Royal Wedding in May.

UNDER SCRUTINY

The pair were even forced to deny they were divorcing in June, after rumours swirled online. They then faced further criticism in September, after designer Posh graced the cover of Vogue alongside their five children – amid reports David had refused to take part as the family shot made him feel “uneasy”.

Last month also saw David mocked by fans when he hired lawyer Nick Freeman – nicknamed Mr Loophole – to get him off speeding charges after he was caught driving at 59mph in a 40mph zone earlier this year. Insiders revealed to Closer at the time that Victoria was left angered by David’s actions – insisting the intense backlash was hurtful for their family.

The source adds, “Vic has told David that they need a new set of PR rules. Not only has their marriage faced scrutiny in recent months, but also David’s reputation. She’s told him they need to be careful about the exact wording when asked about their marriage in interviews and keep details to a minimum. Ultimately, she’s just sick of the criticism and worries about how the kids feel. She’s told David they need to work together to stop this negative wave of publicity for good.”
