Gemma’s proposal to Arg: “Stay sober and I’ll make us the new Kimye”
As Arg takes inspiration from Kanye West and finds God, his on/off girlfriend – and Kardashian megafan – Gemma Collins hopes his faith will turn them into her idols
The seemingly never-ending on-and-off drama between Gemma Collins and
James ‘Arg’ Argent continued last week after she confirmed their latest split, claiming there was “no going back” during a TOWIE cameo. However, three days after the episode aired, they were spotted in Dubai, walking hand in hand and kissing.
It’s yet another U-turn for Gemma, 38, who was reportedly forced to call 999 last month amid fears Arg, 31, had taken an overdose and collapsed. Arg, who has had a long-term battle with drug and alcohol addiction, later insisted he was “fine” and shrugged off concerns for his health. And now pals say the reality star’s new-found faith – inspired by rapper Kanye West – has helped prove to “spiritual” Gemma that he’s determined to finally beat his demons.
MENTAL HEALTH
In a recent Instagram post, Arg recited lyrics written by Kanye, 42 – who famously turned to religion during his own mental health battles, and has a weekly religious celebration called Sunday Service – quoting, “I want to talk to God but I’m afraid as we ain’t spoke in so long”, while also sharing the words, “I need Jesus.”
A source tells Closer, “Gemma has always encouraged Arg to seek out alternative ways to get his life back on track, urging him to speak to her spiritual healer and psychic – which he’s not shown an interest in before, so she sees this as a really encouraging sign. Arg hopes that his soulsearching and new-found religion will be enough to prove to her how serious he really is about turning his life around.”
Since leaving TOWIE in May – after he was allegedly sacked from the show for testing positive for cocaine – Arg’s weight ballooned to 23.5 stone. But he’s managed to get back on track before. In 2017, he took to Christianity during a rehab stint in Thailand where he lost over a stone, reuniting with Gemma after his return.
And now he has found religion again, pals say Gemma is also hoping this will be key to their relationship lasting this time round and they’ll be able to start a family. Last month, Gemma told Closer she was still hopeful she’ll become a mum, and although she hadn’t frozen her eggs as she once planned, she added, “I do want kids, definitely that will happen.” Earlier this year, she revealed she and Arg didn’t use contraception as he believes “God will decide”.
A source says, “Gemma is always optimistic every time she and Arg get back together. She hopes his religious awakening, inspired by Kanye, will keep him on the straight and narrow so they’ll have a baby.”
And there seems to be no end to the self-coined ‘The GC’’s ambition. She lost 3st on her stint on Dancing On Ice in February, going on to land a record deal, film her own reality show, and launch a BBC podcast, with more in her sights. And pals say she’s plotting her and Arg’s joint path to stardom by putting him in touch with her friend and former CBB co-star Jonathan Cheban, 45, whose best pal is tee-total Kim Kardashian, 39.

The source says, “Gemma enjoys being a star, but she really loves the idea of being a power couple – and with Arg ‘doing a Kanye’ and finding God, she’s said this could be their big break and they could finally make it as the UK’s answer to Kim and Kanye. She thinks his faith may be a way in. Gemma’s vision is that Kanye can help Arg set up his own UK version of his Sunday Service and then they can both lead with their incredible voices.”
Last week, Gemma also said she was assembling a Christmas gospel choir, adding, “[It’s] like what Kanye does... [It’ll] be a huge sing-song, feel-good factor.”
The source continues, “Kim is cagey about introducing new people into her close-knit circle, so Gemma has asked Jonathan to pass on information about Arg’s past battles and his faith to Kanye, with the hope his story will resonate with the rapper and he’ll take him under his wing. Gemma knows they have to look serious. She’s told Arg he can’t do anything to mess this up and has to stay sober – and she’ll make them the new Kimye.”
Pals say she also thinks having a baby will help her bond with mum-of-four Kim.
The source says, “She’s imagining swanky dinners with her and Kim bonding over their love of babies, while Arg and Kanye talk about religion. It may sound like a pipe dream, but with her being pally with Jonathan, Gemma is confident that it’ll happen and she’ll finally get her dream of a family.”
