EASY WAYS TO ENCOURAGE YOUR KIDS TO GET ACTIVE

Research has shown that almost nine out ten British girls fail to hit exercise targets. Emma explains what’s putting them off, and how to remove those barriers and encourage them to enjoy sport

ritish girls are among the least active in the world. A sedentary lifestyle is linked to obesity, diabetes, and poor mental health, so parents should encourage their children to exercise enough.

HELP THEM TO LOVE THEIR BODIES

One of the main reasons girls are less likely to exercise is self-consciousness. They dislike getting changed in front of others, worrying what peers think about the way they look. That’s why the earlier you get your girls into fitness, the better, because when kids are very young, they don’t worry about social norms and expectations. Establishing an activity routine early makes fitness just part of their life. If your child doesn’t like their appearance, help build their self-confidence by using body-positive language. Don’t criticise your body or other people’s, and compliment them for what their body can do rather than how it looks. Help your kids recognise that bodies are fast, strong and flexible, and explain there is no such thing as an “ideal” body.

FIND A GOOD COACH

Some girls hate competition and don’t feel they are sporty, so show them different ways of being fit. They don’t have to win the 100m to be active – introduce them to group fitness activities that are more fun, like park fitness, roller skating, or dance classes. Research has found that three factors make sport fun for girls – being coached by someone positive, feeling part of a team and trying hard. Winning doesn’t even factor. Enjoyment is the biggest driver for activity, and active girls are happier and more resilient, so getting fit has lifelong positive consequences.

DO IT AS A FAMILY

Take older kids on weekend hikes (the Hollywood celebrities do it!), or go on a bike ride together. Children enjoy spending time with their parents and these activities also allow for positive communication. If your child is nervous to exercise outside, follow YouTube workout videos or use apps together at home so they can get fit without any fuss – and, as a bonus, you do too.
