WHY YOU SHOULD SPEND TIME WITH ANIMALS

Studies show that being in the company of our furry friends can make us less stressed. Emma agrees and says you don’t need to become a full-time pet owner to benefit, either

-

esearch by vet charity PDSA shows that 84 per cent of pet owners feel that the company of their animal boosts their wellbeing. During lockdown, having a pet to feed and care for provides structure and meaning to our days, but that doesn’t mean you should rush to the pet shop.

EASE ANXIETY

The reason pets increase wellbeing is that they are always happy to see you, and ensure that you never feel alone, always feel enough, and have someone to talk to should you find yourself struggling. Research has shown that spending time caring for your animal releases serotonin and oxytocin – chemicals that make you feel happy and connected – while stroking your pet helps to reduce the stress hormone cortisol. Studies also show that children brought up with a dog in the home tend to have higher levels of empathy and compassion.

DO IT PART-TIME

That does not mean we should all get a pet – they take work and commitment, and even the smallest animal will need caring for when you go away. Everyone can find creative ways of sharing time with animals, though. If you can help for a short time, rescue shelters need foster carers to give pets a temporary home.

You won’t need to commit to a lifetime of ownership, but will get all the benefits a pet brings, and you’ll be doing an amazing thing, too. Schemes like Borrow My Doggy allow you to spend regular time with someone else’s dog, and Trusted House Sitters lets you take a free holiday in someone else’s home to look after their pets while they are away. You could also ask a neighbour if they would let you walk their dog or pet sit for them.

TAKE IN NATURE

Aside from your pets, spend time appreciating nature outdoors. Watch the wildlife from your garden or balcony, or in a local park. It helps you connect with the here and now, reminds you of the wonder all around you, and is powerful for positive wellbeing. Buy some bird and squirrel food, put it out and do something fantastic for both wildlife and your mental health in the same moment.
