‘Being healthy is more important than looking perfect’

-

While many celebrities spent lockdown in the comfort of their homes, Love Island 2018 contestant Dr Alex George,

30, was on the frontline, as he continued working as an A&E doctor at a London hospital. As a result of being at high risk from the deadly virus, he was forced to isolate at home, away from his girlfriend Amelia Bath, with whom he was finally reunited last month.

Alex says, “One of the most difficult aspects of lockdown was that human touch was lost. I don’t think people realised how important that was – we all took hugging our friends or high-fiving for granted. It’s something so simple but it’s massive for making you feel good. The way we interact with people has changed now, for the foreseeable anyway. Will we shake hands any more? Will we be as tactile with friends? Working on the frontline and isolating alone, I went without human contact for ages – I wasn’t able to hug my girlfriend or my family.

“I also hope that once the pandemic is over, a lot of people will reassess their priorities.

I’ve been on a reality TV show and I’m now back to work as a doctor. I think people will change what they look for in ‘influencers’ and will want a different kind of inspiration. Isn’t someone who can save lives, or help others, much cooler than someone who just poses for photos? Instead of being obsessed with looking perfect, hopefully people will focus more on being fit and healthy, so they can stay safe and strong in the future.”
