White witch:

Ginny Metheral is adamant her witchcraft will keep her family safe

- By Mel Fallowfield

“I cast spells to protect my family from coronavirus”

Standing at her oven in her Devon home, Ginny Metheral stirs her saucepan, but she isn’t cooking dinner for her husband and three children, aged 15, 13 and 11 – instead she’s creating a potion to use in a spell.

Ginny, 48, a web designer, explains, “I’m a white witch – and proud. I only do spells for good, such as to protect and help people. When the pandemic hit earlier this year, I was of course worried about my family and I catching coronavirus, so I cast a spell to protect us from it using crystals and lavender. So far, we’ve all been fine, and I’m convinced it’s the spell that protected us.

“There’s still a stigma attached to witchcraft, but I want to end that by convincing people that it’s a force for good.”

SUCCESS

Ginny – who wears a pointy hat when she casts spells – is a fourth generation witch. She says, “My great-grandmother would consult tarot cards and my grandmother was a medium. My mother read palms and had extraordinary premonitions. Once, we were driving along and she just slammed on the brakes – seconds later a car came speeding out of a side road and would have crashed into us if we hadn’t stopped.

“I learned my skills from my mother – I watched what she did as she made herb potions and read the palms of her friends. She got me involved from the age of six and, to me, it was perfectly normal. From then on, I’d read books of spells and started practising myself.

“I didn’t tell many people growing up, though, and even now, I won’t tell anyone until I know them well and trust they won’t judge, as there is such prejudice against witches. My husband accepts it, though my children are very embarrassed – they show no interest in magic at the moment and always ask me not to practise any spells if their friends are round. My mother-in-law is horrified and other relations have asked me to stop talking about it, but I refuse to be ashamed.”

One of Ginny’s most successful spells led to her meeting her husband. She admits, “I was 24 and desperate to find love, so I did a spell from a book which involved planting peas in a pot. A few weeks later, three of them had sprouted and I met my

husband. He knew early on I was interested in witchcraft and he was very laid-back about it.”

Ginny mostly uses plants in her spells – but she occasionally uses her own blood, too. She explains, “When we moved into our house, I made a potion that included my blood from a tiny cut on my finger and placed it around the property to protect us. A few years later, my husband lit a bonfire in the garden that got out of control and we had to call the fire brigade – but the flames stopped at the boundary where I’d done the spell. I was so relieved it had worked!

POWERS

“I’ve been asked to do spells for people locally and also house cleansings – removing any spirits from a new home – and I’m more than happy to share my knowledge. People can be very dismissive of my powers, and some say I’m taking advantage of gullible people, but I disagree.

“I use all different sorts of magic – I harness the power of crystals and spirits, as well as making potions, and I make my own wands using wood from different trees. I use oak if the spell is about wisdom and knowledge, hawthorn for love, and blackthorn for protection.”

And Ginny is very pleased about how her spell against coronavirus turned out. She says, “At the beginning of the pandemic, I gathered together my crystals and some lavender and harnessed the powers of healing spirits, and cast it over us. I’d love to be able to have a spell that created a vaccine or banish the virus completely, but it’s not as easy as that. My magic works on a personal basis, so I can only keep myself, loved ones and people I know safe.

“It’s a funny life being a witch – you’re met with scepticism or branded ‘bonkers’. But I know what I can do and the power of witchcraft!”
