Posh’s fears for Brooklyn as he ‘rushes’ to marry
As wedding bells loom for newly engaged Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz, Victoria Beckham warns him of the difficulties she and David endured at the start of their marriage
SHE WANTS TO ENSURE THEY’RE PREPARED FOR A LIFELONG COMMITMENT – WITH
ALL ITS UPS AND DOWNS
She said she
“could not be happier” after her eldest son Brooklyn announced his engagement to American billionaire heiress Nicola Peltz last week, after nine months of dating, in a gushing Instagram post.
But while Victoria Beckham, 46, has been celebrating what she’s described as “the MOST amazing news”, insiders say the mum-of-four is a little concerned at the speed at which the relationship is moving.
A source tells Closer, “While Vic’s thrilled, she’s naturally a little worried by the whirlwind nature of it and wants to ensure they’re both fully aware and prepared for the lifelong commitment of marriage, with all its ups and downs.
“Vic adores Nicola and can see how happy she makes Brooklyn. She instantly warmed to her and admires her hard work ethic, in spite of her fortunate upbringing. But she remembers the challenges in her first few years of marriage to David and wonders if they would be better waiting a little longer before rushing up the aisle. She just wants to be sure that Brooklyn is acting with his head, as well as his heart.”
PRESSURE
In a case of history repeating itself, Brooklyn’s dad David, 45, was just one year older than his son when he popped the question to the then 23-year-old Spice Girl, a year after meeting in 1998. And despite the couple – also parents to Romeo, 17, Cruz, 15, and nine-year-old Harper – recently celebrating 21 years of marriage, Posh remembers the pressure fame brought them in their early days. The source says, “Vic often says that their life as newlyweds felt more like a soap opera at times – going at the speed of light and with people out to get them. She told Brooklyn and Nicola to take their time to enjoy the engagement and prepare themselves for married life. She knows that, just like her and David, Nicola and Brooklyn’s early days as a married couple
will be spent in the full glare of the spotlight and she wants them to be prepared for that. It can be tough. Nicola is the centre of Brooklyn’s world now, but Vic still feels they should just enjoy the ‘now’.”
Posh – who’s reportedly been given the green light to launch a health and lifestyle brand in the US to rival Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop empire – and David endured their fair share of drama during the first years of marriage, with a series of terrifying death threats and a kidnap plot against Posh, Brooklyn and Romeo. It came after David had been branded “England’s most hated man” following the country’s World Cup 1998 defeat, when he was sent off for kicking his Argentinian opponent Diego Simeone. Describing that period as a “difficult” time, David later recalled, “It was hard for me to talk about it on camera… That was a real low for my family.”
Then, in 2003, the marriage was dealt another blow when David’s former personal assistant, Rebecca Loos, claimed she had had an affair with David following his move to Real Madrid – something he denied.
Just two years ago, David opened up about the struggles of marriage, admitting, “To have been married for the amount of time we have, it’s always hard work,” he said, adding, “It becomes a little more complicated.”
PLAYING THE FIELD
Brooklyn, 21, has a long list of exes, including rocky romances with actress Chloe Moretz, 23, and models Madison Beer, 21, and Hana Cross, 23 – with whom he split shortly before he started dating Nicola, 25, last October.
And insiders say that
David – who was notably the last of Brooklyn’s immediate circle to post congratulatory messages on social media – had initial reservations about the engagement. The source says, “David was quick to marry Victoria, but times have changed and he thought Brooklyn might still have wanted a few years left of being able to play the field.
But Brooklyn has assured him that’s not the case and what he really wants is a solid marriage, like theirs. Despite his initial concern, like Victoria, David now accepts that Brooklyn knows what he is doing and they’re confident he has found the perfect girl to spend the rest of his life with.”
LAVISH WEDDING
Photographer Brooklyn – who proposed with a £250,000 five-carat diamond ring – and Nicola, 25, celebrated their upcoming nuptials at Posh and David’s Cotswolds home with both sets of Brooklyn’s grandparents. Nicola’s father, billionaire investor Nelson
Peltz, 78, is reportedly preparing to fork out £4m for two lavish wedding parties in the UK and Florida, where he and his wife, former supermodel Claudia Heffner, 65, own a £76m estate in Palm Beach. Posh and David are said to be helping the couple buy a London pad together.
Our insider says that fashion designer Posh – who has a combined £335m fortune with David – is using their time spent together in the countryside to get even closer to her future daughter-in-law, who gushed she loved Victoria “so so much” on Instagram. The young couple have returned to the Beckhams’ home after being locked down together at Nicola’s New York pad. “Vic’s looking forward to bonding further with Nicola – even offering to design her dress,” the source adds. “Despite her initial concerns, Vic thinks she’s a lovely girl and can’t wait for her to be part of the family.” By Daisy McLure
