‘It’ll be difficult – but good on them for getting a job!’

-

Pop culture and PR expert Nick Ede says that he is surprised by the announcement, given how difficult it is to make it in the TV world.

He says, “In the TV industry, it’s not a case of everything you touch turns to gold – it’s really difficult to be successful in this world and come up with ideas that get the ratings. For every Simon Cowell and every X Factor success, there are millions of flops. Even big stars like Madonna have tried to carve out a career in TV but have failed – it’s not all about your name.

“Worryingly, Harry and Meghan are wrong if they think they will have complete control over what they create. While they’ll have a big say, Netflix want ratings, so if something isn’t working, they will no doubt intervene.

“What the couple do have on their side is their connections and I suspect they’ll align themselves with their A-list friends and their pals in the TV world to give them advice in the coming months.”

Since their departure from the royal family, Harry and Meghan insisted they would be “financially independent”, after they faced criticism for using taxpayer’s money to fund their security, as well as calls for the couple to repay the millions of pounds worth of renovations to their former UK home, Frogmore Cottage.

And Nick says that a big positive to come out of the deal is that the couple are showing they have heard these calls and are standing on their own feet.

He says, “They insisted they’d live off their own money, and they’re doing that – so it’s great for their PR in that sense. Now they can’t be criticised for owing money or living off the royals, as they’ve got the pay cheque. If they pull it off and get the ratings and praise, this Netflix collaboration could be brilliant. We’ll have to wait and see.”
