THE SISTER
EXCELLENT NEW DRAMA MON 26-THU 29 OCT, 9PM, ITV
Nathan (Russell Tovey) is about to commit suicide when he sees a woman on TV appealing for information about her missing sister. Fast-forward seven years, and he’s happily married to Holly, the woman who made the appeal. But one dark night, his creepy mate Bob (Bertie Carvel) turns up – and Nathan’s life is thrown into turmoil. It’s a chilling, deeply atmospheric drama, with Tovey commanding the screen as Nathan – who has a very dark secret about his past. Shown over four nights, The Sister will grip you from the very first scene.
Was this a difficult role to take on?
It’s the most challenging job
I’ve ever done. I do completely immerse myself into every character I play, which made it rather hard – living with this guy for nine weeks. Nathan was going through so much emotionally.
There’s a supernatural element… Has anything paranormal ever happened to you?
I’m convinced I saw a big white ghost dog years ago. My friends lived in an old rectory building and, a week before, there was a psychic there who started stroking something in the air and said, “You’ve got a big white dog believed me…
Where did you film The Sister? Mostly around London, and some of the most challenging scenes were done during two weeks of night shoots in the rain. It was really tough, but it looks amazing on screen. I cannot wait for people to see the show. How important do you think TV drama is in these current times? People need the escape of TV drama more than ever. The way people communicate emotions is through art, which helps in our understanding of the world. No one in our lifetime has ever before experienced anything like what is happening now – but you must have hope. I think it [coronavirus] is going to change a lot of things. Hopefully, something good will come out of it – for the whole planet.
