Jen and Courteney take friendship to next level with new show

The Friends stars are set to reunite in a new spin-off after supporting each other through their relationship woes

Fans of hit sitcom Friends rejoiced when Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow reunited for this year’s virtual Emmy Awards, with Jennifer joking that they had all been “roommates since 1994”. It was the perfect tonic following the news that filming for the reunion show, which was originally set to happen in March in front of a live audience, has been postponed twice due to the pandemic. But an insider says that Jen, 51, and Courteney, 56, are keen to get in front of the camera together again in a new show, which will be a spin-off about their Friends’ characters Monica Geller and Rachel Green’s friendship.

SUCCESSFUL

“Lockdown has taught Jen and Courteney that they can depend on each other 100 per cent and that, together, they can make almost anything happen,” an insider tells Closer. “They’ve been doing all the leg work for the Friends reunion and, while it’s going to go ahead, they’ve also decided that it might be easier going forward if they concentrate on a project, just the two of them.”

Recently, Jen produced and starred in award-winning drama The Morning Show. She’s also produced films, including The Switch and Management. Courteney – who’s set to star in Scream 5 in 2022 – has her own Facebook Watch original series, 9 Months With Courteney Cox, where ten new families share their extraordinary pregnancies. So both actresses are well-equipped to produce and feature in their own show.

The insider continues, “Jen and Courteney feel the closest, and are the most committed to the reunion. They’ve said that if the others don’t want to do anything past the one-off reunion episode, then they would consider doing a spin-off with their characters, or a new project, which is exciting them both.”

LOYAL

The pair have remained close pals since Friends ended in 2004 and are often pictured catching up over lunch and holidaying together. Courteney has been maid of honour at both Jen’s weddings – her first to Brad

Pitt in 2004 and her second to Justin Theroux in 2015 – and was also there for Jen through the break-ups. “I’ve slept in her guest bedroom a lot. Without giving away too much of my private stuff, all I can say is she’s been there for me through thick and thin,” admitted Jen, who’s recently been linked to former co-star Gerard Butler. Similarly, Jen, who is godmother to Courteney’s daughter, Coco, 16, was there for Courteney amid her divorce from Coco’s dad, actor David Arquette, in 2012, and also more recently when LA-based Courteney was forced apart from her fiancé Johnny McDaid, who was stuck in the UK at the start of lockdown.

Last week, Jen revealed she’d adopted a rescue puppy – named Lord Chesterfield – who joins her other pet dogs, Sophie, a white pitbull, and Clyde, a Schnauzer mix. And pals say Courteney, who has Cavalier King Charles spaniels Harley and Hopper, is just as happy as her best pal.

The source says, “Courteney is thrilled for her, because she worries that Jen can get lonely sometimes and she’s happy to see that she’s expanded her furry family yet again. She’s already sent Jen a huge bouquet of dog gifts, and they’re looking forward to going on hikes together with their puppies in tow.”

And it seems their inseparable bond will return to the screen, too. “They’ve been each other’s rock throughout lockdown,” says the source. “And they want to come out the other side brimming with ideas and projects.”
