IS VITAMIN C THE ANSWER TO LOCKDOWN SKIN?

Stress, lack of sleep and time indoors all contribute to a dull complexion – we ask the experts if an everyday antioxidant can bring back that radiant glow

DRY, SALLOW SKIN?

Dullness can cause your complexion to look grey and tired. A few things can cause this, according to Dr Ophelia Veraitch, Consultant Dermatologist at Cranley Clinic. She says, “As we age, skin starts producing less oil compared to when we were younger. This is why we don’t tend to get as many spots in later life, but this can also cause dead skin cells to build up on your face, making it appear less radiant. During lockdown, we’re all staying in a lot more, and when we do go out for essentials, we’re masked up and covered up in the cold, so we’re not getting much vitamin D from the sun – if there is any! Like vitamin C, vitamin D also has antioxidant properties and a lack of both can leave you looking drained.”

SO WHAT’S THE MAGIC?

“Vitamin C is a powerful hero ingredient that fights against free radicals such as pollution in the environment.” Dr Ophelia continues.

“Pollutants cause inflammation, which is the root of numerous skin issues, including acne, a breakdown of collagen, and excess melanin production that leads to dark spots and dullness. Vitamin C is extremely effective at brightening the skin and stimulating collagen production.” Pollutants don’t just come from outside, such as car fumes. They can be things in your home like central heating, blue light damage from electrical devices, and even steam from cooking.

HOW TO APPLY

“Usually vitamin C is most effective when in a serum, applied after cleansing and in the morning,” says Dr Ophelia. But what about other formulations like masks and cleansers? She explains, “There is no point in putting a vitamin C formula on for a short time and then washing it off. It’s that simple.” Supplements can also be used to top up the supply internally if you’re not getting it from your diet. “Oral supplementation with vitamin C effectively increases levels of it in the skin. And there is evidence that a combination of vitamin C and E supplements are needed for significant antioxidant protection in the skin.” Ophelia adds, “Combining vitamin C with other active ingredients like retinol (a derivative of vitamin A) in your skincare regime is a great idea. Use vitamin C first thing after cleansing and before SPF (it boosts the efficiency of your SPF) and then use a retinol-based serum in the evening after cleansing.” The combination of the two active ingredients will overhaul any complexion.
