HOW TO KICK UNHEALTHY HABITS IN LOCKDOWN
Many of us are drinking more, eating badly and overspending in the face of this pandemic, but Emma says there are some simple, practical ways to ditch our vices and feel more in control
Iam vegan, keep relatively fit and think of myself as healthy, but while being confined to the house more, I have become a bit of a caffeine and sugar addict. According to research, in the last 12 months there has been mounting growth in problems associated with the use of alcohol, prescription pills, gambling and overeating.
BUILD AWARENESS
This is unsurprising given the continuing pandemic and disruption to our old way of life. Stress, sadness, fear and boredom are often triggers for unhealthy behaviours. While they soothe in the moment, in the long-term you end up feeling unhappy, exhausted, and often more afraid, which then sends you on a destructive cycle. If this is resonating with you, the good news is bad habits can be broken. Make a list of all the behaviours that you believe are damaging to your life, because seeing it in black and white helps you to begin the process of becoming accountable for your actions. Next, look at the triggers that cause you to overeat, or pour another glass of wine. This may be getting through a busy day of work or homeschool, or the reaction you have to the news.
FIND STRATEGIES
Note the way you feel, then make a list of strategies to implement when you notice this feeling next time around. These can be simple distractions, such as calling a friend, putting on some music and dancing, listening to a meditation stream, or putting your energy into preparing a delicious meal. You could also journal your feelings to explore these triggers in a more constructive and cathartic way. Recognising patterns is key to working out a solution.
CONFIDE TO GET HELP
If you have become totally dependent on a substance, be it painkillers or alcohol, pick up the phone and make an appointment to speak to your GP. Also tell someone that you really trust and who is close enough to you to confide in.
The moment that you make a positive change is the moment you begin to take control of your overall health and wellbeing.
