‘I let my roots grow out and caked on the make-up’

Actress Katie McGlynn, 27, on landing her first role since Corrie – in the new Kay Mellor drama filmed during lockdown…

You play a single mum?

Georgina is gobby and a bit rough around the edges. It was lockdown, but I specifically didn’t get my roots done all summer. I thought, “We can do something with this!” I caked on the make-up – and I just tried to channel my inner chav…

What was filming like?

Normally I’d hug everyone, doing the “showbiz kiss”. I missed that. Everyone had a mask on, and you had to be really careful. I also had to do my own make-up, which was odd...

And you had to work with dogs?

I was nervous anyway on my first day, and then I had a load of dogs to deal with because my character works at the kennels. We practised the scene without them, and the director said, “You know all this will go wrong when the dogs come in…?”

Will you be watching this?

I don’t know, you know… I think I might just see what everyone’s reaction is first, and then tune in when I’m by myself… Have you kept up with Corrie? (Katie played Sinead Tinker, who lost a tragic battle with cancer...)

I didn’t watch my own funeral – I thought that would be too weird! I did tune in to the scenes where (Sinead’s on-screen husband) Daniel was making his new girlfriend Nicky wear Sinead’s clothes. I was like, “She’s got my cardigan on!”

Did you take away a souvenir?

I kept a pair of Sinead’s shoes – the fancy creepers that she wore. How have the past few months been for you?

I have to count my lucky stars really… I haven’t worked as much as I would’ve wanted to, but I was able to do The Syndicate and also Stand Up & Deliver for Channel 4 (where celebs were challenged to do stand-up comedy) – that was fun!
