Are make-up wipes ruining your skin?

They may be convenient, but when it comes to removing make-up and grime, wipes may be just as damaging for our skin as they can be to the environment. Specialist Jane Scrivner gives the lowdown on how to best care for your complexion…

ARE THEY REALLY THAT BAD?

Whether you’re wearing minimal make-up or a full-on face, we should all be ensuring our complexion is properly cleansed before hitting the sheets. While they are undoubtedly convenient, they may cause long-lasting damage to your skin. Skincare expert and facialist Jane Scrivner explains, “While face wipes do remove some traces of make-up, they don’t clean as thoroughly as facial cleanser and water, so traces of product and oil may be left behind to clog up pores.” She adds, “Some of the chemicals and harsh parabens in wipes can cause dryness. They strip the skin of its natural oils, which can lead to inflammation, and irritation.” Furthermore, the rough material of most wipes can lead to an increase in fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation as well.

Jane also explains that make-up wipes can have a knock-on effect on the rest of your skincare regime, saying, “If you’re not following a proper cleansing routine, any additional follow-on products will be compromised because they’re being applied onto dirty skin, meaning the absorbency and penetration would be far less effective.” As well as negatively impacting your skin, many face wipes are also bad news for the environment. With limited biodegradable options, nonreusable wipes often end up being flushed into water systems, filling up the oceans, or dumped in landfill, taking years to break down.

WHAT’S THE SOLUTION?

The good news is that there are plenty of alternatives. Jane says, “I suggest opting for a balm or oil-based cleanser. Although they’re not as speedy as a wipe, they’re much more effective. Cleansers help to gently remove all traces of grime and make-up, without irritating the skin. Ingredients such as brightening vitamin C and spot-busting salicylic acid are worth looking out for when choosing your product. After rinsing, your skin shouldn’t feel tight or dry. If it does, this is an indication that the product is too harsh and altering the delicate PH balance of your face.” She adds, “It’s also worth investing cotton flannels and microfibre clothes. These are effective and gentle. Use a clean cloth each time (damp cloths breed bacteria), then machine-wash and leave to air dry.”
