Crack open the prosecco! Graham Norton, 58, is back with his most withering put-downs from the Eurovision commentary box (hooray!)

-

You’re back! I’m so thrilled! Even if people can’t travel to the venue, the return of the show will be a real highlight for fans everywhere. Did you miss it last year? Although the contest didn’t happen in 2020, the [celebratory highlights] show that the Eurovision team put together was emotional, comforting and optimistic – which are really the qualities of the best Eurovisions. Why is it such a tonic?

As the vaccines roll out and we see light at the end of the tunnel, the contest is a great opportunity for people to come together and celebrate. And it seems the spirit of the 2021 Eurovision is one big party!

Your views on this year’s entry...? James Newman has done a great job – Embers is such a striking image for where we are. Hopefully we’ll do well!

What’s your fave style of tune? For me it’s a combination of the song and the performance on the night. So many times, one I haven’t really rated will cut through and make its mark. That’s what makes it exciting – there’s no winning formula! How does it feel to be part of the Eurovision family? It’s been a dream come true! I hope people know that while I may poke fun at some of the excesses and absurdities on the night, I’m doing it as someone who loves Eurovision. If you weren’t hosting the show, how would celebrate? I’d be at home cheering for my favourites, surrounded by assorted European snacks and various empty bottles! Before I became the BBC commentator, I didn’t really have any Eurovision traditions, but now I always wear a suit – and I raise a glass in loving memory of Sir Terry...
