5 MINUTES WITH...

TV actor and presenter Robson Green, 56 – back on our screens with a fishing show and travelogue, touching upon matters of the heart…

Tell us all about it.

You don’t have to be a fishing fan to tune in! This is a beautiful travelogue explaining what makes us genuinely happy. We’re travelling more than 1,000 miles across this stunning island. It’s just the two of us, a small camera crew and a few locals. And we see you opening up about your addiction issues...

It got to the point where I couldn’t deal with being in the public eye [Robson was part of a hugely successful double act with his Soldier Soldier co-star Jerome Flynn]. Cigarettes, alcohol and drugs became my refuge – I’d be drinking at least one bottle of wine a day, and I’d use cocaine to keep me awake. This was 1996. It was nonstop promotions and peoplepleasing, but I’d lost my bearings and I knew I needed help.

How does fishing come into it?

I went to see a therapist, and he got me to understand what made me happy. He said, “You talk a lot about fishing!” He told me to make time for it, and so I went and bought a fishing rod – and I went out on a river in the North East of England and started catching fish. Surrounded by nature and solitude, I found my inner peace. It was my salvation.

What’s coming up next for you? Grantchester series six will be on soon and I’ve been filming a new Coast To Coast for Channel 5. The British Isles is home to over 30,000 miles of stunning coastline and we’ll be following the lives of people who bring seafood from the ocean to you and me. We didn’t have much luck with the weather but, basically, when you’re in the Hebrides, you must buy an anorak!
