STOP FEELING LIKE A FAILURE AT WORK

If you’re going through a career slump while your friends are succeeding, it’s hard not to compare. Here’s how to manage it

-

The pandemic has seen even the most career-confident of us struggle. You might have been placed on furlough and feel you’ve fallen behind. Maybe you even lost your job, or have found it hard to stay motivated when working from home. Many of us have been left feeling burnt out, stuck or isolated. So what can we do to get our careers – and our confidence – back on track? If others are being promoted or getting new opportunities, it’s important to stop making unhealthy comparisons. The only job you need to focus on is your own. If you are being passed over for a pay rise, discuss it with your boss. Before the meeting, write down the reasons you believe you should be considered, so you have evidence to support your request. If they say no, ask them what you should work on.

If you’re unhappy in your job, start looking for a new one.

Don’t wait to be invited to apply – show some initiative. Research the companies you like, refresh your CV, enclose a covering letter telling them why you want to work there and send it in. If you’re unsure of what direction you want to take, write yourself a work wish list – note the type of environment you want to work in and your skills and passions. Then put your list somewhere obvious like your fridge door so you’re regularly reminded. You can also take an assessment at nationalcareers.service.gov.uk to help find your next role. Try not to get too down – there is more for you, if you’re willing to find it.
