THE STREET DOGS WHO NEED YOUR HELP THIS SUMMER

-

It’s not just China where dogs are suffering – there are more than 30 million owner-less dogs in India. Many encounter disease, hunger and cruelty but, given the right conditions, they can enjoy a good existence.

Street dogs play an important role in their local eco-systems as they keep the vermin population down and prevent the spread of disease. But the ever-worsening monsoon season in India – which runs from June to September

– is putting huge pressure on the services that help these animals. Tree Of Life For Animals (TOLFA) shelter in Rajasthan has been completely flooded for the third year in a row and is currently under 2ft of water. All the animals are being moved to high ground, but it’s putting even more pressure on TOLFA after a testing year working throughout the pandemic.

Jo Carnegie, ambassador for TOLFA, says, “Life for India’s street dogs is a lot harder than for domesticated pets. But as long as a street dog is healthy and has access to food, water, shelter and medical care, they can lead happy lives in which they are free to express their natural behaviours.

“They are intelligent, affectionate and resilient animals who are positive and forgiving, often no matter what has happened to them. Although most don’t have owners, there is a growing ‘caregiving’ culture in India, where local families and businesses look after the animals and call for medical attention if needed.

“The monsoon season is our busiest period, with over 30 dogs per day coming in with maggot wounds. Plus, with flooded and damaged premises, it’s important to be able to keep the animals safe, warm and dry. If anyone can donate to help buy extra blankets, food or new equipment, it would be gratefully received.”
