New fears for Britney as “wild” behaviour puts freedom in jeopardy
Following her father’s announcement that he’ll ‘step down’ as conservator, Britney Spears is closer to freedom than she’s been in 13 years – but loved ones fear she’s wrecking her chances with her ‘erratic’ Instagram posts
Britney Spears’ freedom seemed more possible than ever last week after her father Jamie revealed via his legal team that he’d be “willing to step down” as his daughter’s conservator “when the time is right”.
For her fans, the announcement was a monumental moment in Britney’s bid to throw off the shackles of her conservatorship, which was put in place after her tragic breakdown in 2007.
But despite Britney being so close to removing her father from controlling her life – with her even telling a court recently that she wanted him jailed for “conservatorship abuse” – there are new fears for the star, 39, after a series of Instagram posts show her posing topless and behaving erratically, even telling fans she’ll “live on the edge” one day.
After uploading multiple topless photos over recent weeks, Britney sparked concern again last week when she shared yet another risqué picture of herself, as well as posting a nowdeleted topless video in which she talked about Covid-19 and the importance of feeding your children healthy snacks. Fans wrote, “Britney, we want you to be free but this is a little too much” , and “I really hope she is okay.” And insiders say her recent posts have sparked concern from Britney’s boyfriend of nearly five years, Sam Asghari – who has been her biggest supporter and confidante for nearly half of her conservatorship, and has previously referred to her as his “lioness” because of everything she’s battled against.
A source says, “Sam’s always championed Britney and has been behind her the whole way, giving her the confidence to keep fighting.
“But over the last couple of weeks, there’s been a shift and Sam’s now starting to worry.
“He’s increasingly concerned about some of her more erratic behaviour and is trying to be a calming influence. His view is that, while she’s had a huge victory, she still has a long way to go. What really worries him is that if she continues posting wild pictures and to be seen acting like this, it could jeopardise her chances of ever getting the order lifted and even worsen the situation.”
In a court testimony last month, Britney stunned fans when she revealed the draconian extent of her conservatorship, claiming that, among many things, it banned her from making phone calls, buying a coffee and driving, and forced her to have a contraceptive device to stop her from having children.
TENSION
While Britney has been seen enjoying her recent early steps to freedom – taking rides in her Mercedes, smoking, sharing intimate photos of herself and slamming her conservatorship team publicly – the results of the petition filed by her lawyer Mathew Rosengart last month to remove her father from the conservatorship altogether won’t be heard until the next court hearing on 29 September.
Reaction to Jamie’s recent announcement has been split, with some fans believing the 69 year old – who relinquished his control over Britney’s personal affairs in 2018 after 10 years, but retains power over his daughter’s finances – won’t back out without a fight.
Meanwhile, the insider says there’s some tension growing between Britney and Sam, 27, over his concerns about her new rebellious side.
The source adds, “Brit has told Sam she needed to let go a little, but he worries about the future.
“He believed they were both on the same page about hoping to fall pregnant [Britney’s conservatorship bans her from removing her contraceptive implant] but she doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of sharing those dreams right now – she’s smoking and not
prioritising her health.
“And despite Britney knowing that Sam just wants the best for her, she is very sensitive around any form of control over her – it’s a huge trigger after what she’s been through.”
ALARM BELLS
Sam’s unease comes after Closer reported that Britney’s recent actions had also raised alarm bells among her friends, who are worried that Jamie’s removal from her conservatorship could be the start of a downward spiral for the star.
Some of Britney’s fans have also expressed concern. While supporters have praised her for being “free” amid the ongoing #FreeBritney movement, others have described her latest posts as “painful to watch” and have speculated that she doesn’t “seem well”.
And while Sam revealed in June that he hoped to build an “amazing” and “normal future” with “my better half”, the source says that he has been uncharacteristically quiet over the past few weeks.
The insider adds, “Sam knows he can’t push Britney too far as she is fragile and sensitive. He doesn’t want her to become isolated from him, so he’s trying to tread a very fine line right now.
“He’s just praying she can see sense and know that what he’s saying is for her own good – and for the benefit of their future.”
