Harry Potter returns to UK coins
Harry Potter has returned to official UK coins with the release of a new commemorative 50p dedicated to a ‘key’ moment in Harry Potter’s magical adventures, this time in collaboration with Warner Bros Discovery Global Consumer Products (WBDGCP).
Designed by Bella Biggs, the coin pays tribute to the themes of friendship and adventure that are integral to the magic of Harry Potter’s story. Its design is from an original illustration seen in the US editions of the Harry Potter stories by JK Rowling. The coin features an image of Harry Potter demonstrating his prowess on a broomstick as he seeks to catch a winged key during his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coin at The Royal Mint said: ‘Following the success of The Royal Mint’s previous coin collection celebrating the much-loved first Harry Potter book, we are delighted to see Harry Potter make his numismatic return! The Harry Potter books are a global phenomenon and have inspired a love of reading around the world, so it’s only right we celebrate these enchanting stories on UK coins. We encourage all collectors and Harry Potter fans to have their “wands at the ready” to collect this special coin.’
Previous coins from The Royal Mint that celebrate Harry Potter depict Harry, Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and the Hogwarts Express.
The new 50-pence coin will be available in gold proof, silver proof and brilliant uncirculated editions. Additionally, the coin is available in a 1/40th oz gold proof version.
