Can I display multiple Excel 2013 worksheets?

-

QOlder versions of Excel allowed me to open multiple worksheets and arrange them on the screen in tiers — I think it was called a ‘cascade’. I’d like to be able to do this again, but I can’t remember the steps to take, and can’t find the necessary options in the 2013 edition of Excel I now use. Can you help this forgetful subscriber, because tabs won’t suffice. can be similarly tiled or cascaded.

You’ll find all these options in the Window section of the View tab, in the ribbon at the top. To display two worksheets in separate tiled windows, for example, start by opening the relevant workbook. Click to select the worksheet tab as usual. Next, click View, followed by New Window. This opens the same workbook in a second window. In this second window, select a different worksheet tab. Now click View followed by Arrange All. Select the relevant button — Tiled, in our example (see screenshot below) — then click OK.

AWe’re not sure, but there are certainly a few things to explore. You said that the settings are the same on both computers, but you didn’t give us much else to go on. Have you previously customised Edge’s ‘Top sites’ feature on either machine? We ask because it’s possible to ‘pin’ the website thumbnails that appear on new tabs to ensure they’re always visible, so perhaps you’ve previously cleared the ‘Top sites’ on the laptop and then intentionally or inadvertently clicked the pin icon on the first thumbnail that appeared?

Alternatively, perhaps you disabled and then re-enabled ‘Top sites’? This would clear the thumbnail rack, leaving only one thumbnail with a plus (‘+’) symbol — indicating that you can click it to add custom thumbnails.

If you don’t customise the thumbnails, Edge should add sites to your ‘Top sites’ automatically, so perhaps some corruption has occurred. Disabling and re-enabling the feature could fix this. Open a new tab as usual, then click the Customise link (see picture, above). If the ‘Top sites’ radio button is selected, click the button next to ‘A blank page’ instead. Click Save’, then repeat the process, this time re-enabling ‘Top sites’ (pictured, right). However, if ‘A blank page’ is selected, choose ‘Top sites’ and click Save, then repeat to disable and then re-enable ‘Top sites’. Now restart Edge.
