Inour Windows Live Mail Survival Guide in Issue 477 (page 60), we reported that from 30 June users won’t be able to use Windows Live Mail to access their Outlook.com or older Microsoft webmail accounts (including Hotmail, MSN or live. com). While you can still access your account using the Windows 10 Mail app or online via Outlook. com, we’ll show you how to switch to em Client – a free and easy-to-use email program that works on all Windows versions.

3The New dropdown menu 1 lets you quickly create a new email, calendar event or new contact. The options along the top 2 let you reply, forward, mark or delete a selected email. The program lets you quickly unsubscribe 3 from newsletters and promotional messages. Pictures within the body of your emails aren’t downloaded automatically, so click the link 4 to do this, as long as you’re certain they are safe.

7Click Calendar 1 to see your events. The tickboxes next to your calendars 2 let you show or hide them. You can change your calendar layout 3 and create events by right-clicking the relevant date 4 . You might notice that any calendar events you create in em Client will fail to appear on your Outlook.com calendar if you log in online. This is due to a problem with Microsoft’s servers that the company is currently trying to fix (see step 8).

2Before the program launches, you’ll see an option to upgrade to the paid-for version. Click Later to skip this and remain on the Free version. You’ll now see four backup options at the top. The best option before upgrading your PC to Windows 10 (or reinstalling your operating system) is System Backup 1 because this backs up everything (operating system and files). Next, click the Destination folder 2 , select your external hard drive 3 , then click OK. Give your backup a name 4 and description 5 (so it’s easy to identify), then click Proceed.

6Once you’ve upgraded your PC, it’s possible to restore your files if you suspect any have been lost during the process. If you installed Windows 10 from scratch, reinstall Easeus Todo Backup Free on your PC again (follow Steps 1 and 2 until you click Later to remain on the Free version). Next, connect the external hard drive to your PC, click the program’s ‘Browse to Recover’ option 1 , navigate to your external hard drive 2 , then to the System Backup file 3 (in your System Backup folder), then click OK 4 .

6The program also lets you observe the sky above many cities around the world. To do this, click the Location icon 1 . Now, tick ‘Use current location as default’ at the bottom left. Next, type the name of the city 2 , select it from the list 3 , then close the window to see the sky above your chosen city. Click ‘Return to default location’ 4 to revert to that at any time. Similarly, you can view the sky from other planets, and even the Moon. To do that, click the ‘Sky and viewing options’ icon 5 , select the Landscape tab and choose an option from the list on the left.

3After the fix has been carried out, click the ‘View detailed information’ link at the bottom of the Troubleshooting tool. This gives you a list of problems that were checked 1 and the fixes (if any) that were applied 2 . Click the Print icon 3 if you want to print this information for future reference. Now restart your PC and check if the problems have been fixed. If not, Microsoft suggests that you create a new administrator account. To do this, go to www.snipca. com/21096 again, scroll to the ‘Create a new local administrator account’ dropdown menu 4 and follow the instructions.
