How do I see comment numbers in Word?

-

QI’ve just started a new job where I use Word 2013. As part of my role I have to collaborate on documents with an outside agency, which uses Word 2007. I encountered a problem recently as I reviewed a document, when one of my external contacts flagged a particular comment by its number. I recall using earlier versions of Word where I would do the same, but while I can read and edit the agency staff’s comments without problem, I can’t see the comment numbers. I’ve trawled through Word’s ribbon control but can find no option to enable them. Can you help? Janis Cook

AThe ability to see comment numbers still exists but it is hard to locate. In fact, to access it you’ll need to add a button to the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT).

First, click the down-point arrow to the right of the QAT, which is the little bar of icons at the top left of the Word window. Choose More Commands from the menu and then, under the ‘Choose commands from’ heading, pick All Commands. Now scroll down through the All Commands list to find and click Print Preview Edit Mode (see screenshot). Then click Add followed by OK.

Now, when you need to see the comment numbers, just click the Print Preview Edit Mode button that’s now on the QAT — it looks like a page under a magnifying glass. Note that if you also need to edit with the comment numbers showing you’ll need to untick the Magnifier box in the Preview section on the ribbon.
