Get news stories that are relevant to your interests

In Issue 496’s Best New Apps section, we told you about news app Flipboard’s new Smart Magazines feature. This lets you select more specialised topics of interest within your news feed. Previously, for example, selecting Football as a category of interest meant you would receive a broad range of stories from the world of football. Now you can narrow this down to news about a particular league, specific teams and even favourite players. At the moment, you can only use the Smart Magazines feature on Android phones and iphones.

Install the app (Android www.snipca. com/23632; IOS www.snipca.com/23633) and open it, then create an account or log into your existing one. You’ll see a new search screen called What’s Your Passion. You are restricted to five Smart Magazines, so choose the five areas that interest you most. Tap to select one of the listed subjects (Technology, Sports, Business, etc) or enter a topic in the search field, such as Football or Cricket.

After doing this, you’ll see a list of topics relating to your chosen area of interest. Tap to select the topics you want (see screenshot left). If you don’t see a particular topic you’re interested in, search for it and tap to select the correct autosuggest option. Tap Save when you’ve finished. You’ll now see your first Smart Magazine. Tap it and swipe up to read the top news stories relating to the topics you selected.

Swipe right to the next What’s Your Passion screen and repeat the process to create your other four Smart Magazines. You can also access this content by going to www.flipboard.com on your PC and logging into your account. Smart Magazines appear as tabs at the top of your screen.
