Metadata is a virtual labelling system for your files. Some metadata, such as creation date and file size, is embedded automatically in files. You can add other metadata, such as comments, in the Properties window – but only to one file at a time. To label multiple files in one go, use free new tool File Commentor. It even lets you import entire documents as comments. For example, you could attach a program’s licence document to the program file as metadata.

Unfortunately, the comments you create using this tool don’t then appear in a file’s Properties window. You have to drag the file on to File Commentor to view its comments. Nor does File Commentor add a right-click option to Explorer. So while it’s useful, we’d like to see better integration with Windows.
