Don’t mourn death of the high street
I don’t think Peter Davies should mourn too much about computers and the internet killing the high street (Letters, Issue 501). I’m sure I’m not alone in remembering the bad old days when half the weekend was spent in shopping centres buying stuff. It pains me to think of all the bored hours I wasted in queues and multi-storey car parks when I could have been having lunch in a country pub somewhere.
My life was transformed 15 years ago when I shopped on Amazon for the first time. I soon followed this with my first online supermarket shop. I’ve barely been back to my high street since, which will probably annoy people who talk about it being the hub of a local community. But in my experience the less time you spend shopping, the more time you can actually spend with people doing things you love. Arthur Lomas
