‘Ban encryption’ is a minority view

I must take umbrage with Martha Hennessey’s letter in Issue 500 in which she states “everyone I’ve spoken to says they are happy to sacrifice encryption if it means reducing their chance of being mowed down by a fanatic”. First of all, she cannot use such a small survey to justify her opinion. Secondly, would she send a postcard on which she had written personal info or bank details? Thirdly, would she give the keys of her house to a total stranger? I could go on, but I think Martha should pause for thought before claiming to speak for everyone. Bob Williams
