Save money on printing

Images and adverts in online articles can take up space (and ink) if you decide to print them. A handy solution is the Chrome and Firefox extension ‘Print Friendly & PDF’ (Chrome www.snipca.com/24319; Firefox www.snipca.com/24320).

It removes images and adverts, and even lets you remove any unwanted text (such as captions) before you print. The developer has recently released a new Windows 10 app, which adds this extension to Microsoft Edge.

To install this app, open the Windows Store, type printfriendly, then click ‘Printfriendly and PDF’ in the search results to access that app in the Store. Next, click the Get button, then Launch to open the app.

Microsoft Edge will now open on your PC. Click ‘Turn it on’ to add the extension to your browser. From now on, whenever you’re on a web page that you want to print, click the three dots at the top right of Edge, then click the Printfriendly (green printer) icon.

In the pop-up window that opens (see screenshot), you’ll see your page without any adverts or images. To remove other text elements (such as writer’s bylines, URLS and captions), simply click them. You can undo any changes you make and change the text size using the appropriate options at the top. The options at the top left let you print the page, save it as a PDF or email it using your default email program.
