Microsoft: get the basics right!

-

I recently managed to upgrade the hard drive in my Asus Eee PC 1001HA laptop to an SSD. Given that this requires some fairly extensive dismantling and reassembling of the laptop, I was prepared for some hassle and frustration. Not so, in the event. However, in contrast, I’ve faced intense irritation on going to my desktop to find that Windows 10 is having one of its periodic bouts of failing to recognise the CD/DVD drive. I’ve encountered this before (with Windows 7). On this occasion the drive is listed by the device manager, but it flags a driver ‘digital signature’ issue (Code 52).

Googling the problem yields acres of queries from perplexed computer users and dozens of ‘solutions’ – some effective, many not so much (particularly those from Microsoft – do any of their online suggestions to anything actually work?). The Windows 10 Creators Update is all very well, but I’d prefer to be able to use my CD/DVD drive without having to venture into my registry to fix problems. If anyone from Microsoft is reading this, I suggest you get the basics sorted first! Ted Sheehan
