Must I pay for GPRS services I don’t use?

-

QI’ve got an Orange pay-asyou-go SIM card that I use in an iphone 6. I only top it up with £40 every nine or 10 months, so was surprised to find that Orange keeps taking 65p a day for GPRS services even though I’m not using any. I do keep getting a refund, but it continues to happen. Is this some sort of scam? Julian White

ANo, but it’s puzzling. After he first emailed us Julian told us that Orange has now sent him a new SIM card, and the 65p fee is no longer being taken from his account. But we’ve included his problem because it’s far more common that you might think, and so may help other readers.

Julian thought the phone had an app that was silently using GPRS, and so asked Orange and Apple to check. But both companies said this wasn’t so. However, it’s possible that the phone was switching from Wi-fi to mobile data when the signal was weak, and he was paying 65p for this. It’s also possible he’d installed a malicious app, which was sending text messages using GPRS. We’ll ask Orange and report back.
