LAPTOP Dell Inspiron 15 5000

£749 from www.snipca.com/24851 Tested: Issue 459 Now featuring Intel’s seventh-generation Kaby Lake processors, the Inspiron 15 is great value for a full-size laptop with i7 CPU, anti-glare Full HD screen, 4GB AMD R7 graphics and a 1TB hard drive. More basic models start at £429.

ALTERNATIVE: Asus Zenbook UX310UA

This sleek (if slightly plasticky) 13in adds a super-sharp 3200x1800-pixel screen to i5 performance with a 256GB SSD. £700 from www.snipca.com/24852

ANDROID TABLET Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 9.7

£600 from www.snipca.com/24140 Tested: Issue 501 Samsung’sg’s new mid-sized tablet has a wonderful HDR screen and comes with a pen included, unlike Apple’s ipad Pro. But its processor isn’t the fastest and it’s disappointingly expensive, especially compared to the £339 ipad 9.7in.

ALTERNATIVE: Asus Zenpad 3S 10

With eight-hour battery life and 4GB of memory for fast multitasking, this ipad-like 9.7in tablet is great value. £300 from www.snipca.com/24858

DESKTOP PC Palicompi5titanium

£500 from www.snipca.com/24543 Tested: Issue 504 Not manyny frills, but this Intel Kakaby Lake i5-7400 quad-core PC delivers more raw performance than we’d expect at this price, helped by a 250GB SSD alongside the 1TB hard drive. A DVD writer is included.

ALTERNATIVE: Yoyotech Redback N5

An eight-core Ryzen CPU and 8GB GTX 1070 graphics make this an extremely powerful PC at a fair price. £1,300 from www.snipca.com/24807

APPLE IPHONE Apple iphone SE

£379 from www.snipca.com/24854 Tested: Issue 474 It may bbe Apple’apple’s ‘budbudget’t’ phone,ho bubut the smaller SE still beats many others with decent processing power, a great screen and camera, fingerprint recognition and Apple Pay. A reasonable 32GB of storage is now standard, but there’s no microsd slot to add more.

ALTERNATIVE: iphone 7 This all-round phone just about merits its price, but the 32GB of storage isn’t expandable and the 128GB option costs £100 extra. £599 from www. snipca.com/24856

APPLE IPAD Apple ipad 9.7in

£339 from www.snipca.com/24079 Tested: Issue 500 The replacement for the ipad Air 2 is slightly bulkier and has a downgraded screen but remains the best mid-sized tablet, with a sensible 32GB of storage. You’ll need the £549 ipad Pro if you want to use the Pencil stylus (£99).

ALTERNATIVE: ipad Mini 4 The smaller 7.9in ipad is excellent, but Apple’s decision to sell it only with a huge 128GB makes it unreasonably expensive. £419 from www.snipca.com/24080

ANDROID PHONE Motorola Moto G4

£170 from www.snipca.com/om/21685 Tested: Issue 479 With an attractive 5.5in screen, an excellent 13-megapixel camera, a 13hour battery and decent performance, the G4 is the best budget option.

ALTERNATIVE: Samsung Galaxy S8

The wraparound screen looks stunning and this top-end phone has no real flaws. Now that it’s getting discounted a bit, even the price might not put us off. £612 from www.snipca.com/24857
