DO GET THE SIMPLE STUFF RIGHT
Uninstall programs you don’t need
The background processes, start-up items and other junk that programs add can all hamper performance. Right-click Start, then click ‘Apps and programs’ and get uninstalling.
Disable startup items
Slow startup times aren’t a sign of old age – they’re a sign that you’ve got too many programs launching in the background when you switch on your PC. Open Task Manager and disable any you don’t need.
Keep it free of malware
Malicious software can hamstring your PC and, in some cases, kill it stone dead. So make sure your security tool is switched on, up to date and running regular scans.
Turn off Windows features that strain your system
Windows visual effects can make older PCS sluggish, so switch off the ones you don’t want. Click Start, type adjust, then click the ‘Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows’ link and enable or disable as required.
Clean it
Your computer’s internal components have to work harder if dust is clogging up the vents, and this can shorten their lifespan, so regularly clean your PC and its accessories.
Make sure it doesn’t overheat
Heat is your PCS’ nemesis. Make sure there’s plenty of room for air to circulate. Don’t cover up your laptop’s vents while it’s on your lap and don’t leave it (or your dog) in a hot car.
Use a surge protector
Power surges can be lethal – if you don’t already have one, buy a cheap surge protector and stick it between your PC and the power socket.
