How do I install Kaspersky on my ipad?
QI don’t seem to be able to install Kaspersky Internet Security on my Apple ipad. I use it on my laptop, as recommended by yourselves, and I’d like to safeguard my ipad in the same way. Presently I use F-secure Safe, which I assume is okay. However, I know I can rely on Kaspersky. So why can’t I get it onto my ipad?
AIt would be foolish to say infection is impossible but the fundamental design of Apple’s IOS – the operating system that runs on your ipad – means that it is unlikely ever to happen. It forces apps to operate in a ‘sandbox’, which stops them from accessing the lowest-level workings of the operating system.
It’s this particular design that also means that security apps for ipads and iphones are really nothing more than smoke and mirrors. Put simply, they’re unable to protect anything, because they’re unable to perform outside the sandbox — just like the viruses and malware you fear might infect your ipad.
F-secure Safe, for example, is really just a web browser that stops access to websites known or suspected to be dodgy, or otherwise prevents you from handing over personal information when you should not. To that extent F-secure Safe is a good tool, but it won’t and cannot protect anything you do on your ipad outside of the app itself. Kaspersky has a similar app for IOS, called Kaspersky Safe Browser — and that’s perhaps a more honest name for the tool.
That’s really all there is to it. If you’re worried about encountering fraudulent websites then apps like F-secure Safe and Kaspersky Safe Browser offer peace of mind. But remember that Safari, Apple’s own web browser, built in to IOS, has its own privacy and security features. They should by default all be enabled but it’s easy enough to check, or just take a look to see what’s on offer and how you’re protected. First, from your ipad’s home screen, tap Settings followed by Safari. Now check that all the switches under Privacy & Security are in their On positions (see screenshot).
