How do I print a folder’s contents?

-

QI want to print a list of file names in a specific folder. Years ago you recommended Karen’s Directory Printer, at www.snipca. com/724. I used it on an old PC and thought it’d do the job for my current aim, but when I tried to install it I get an error message about failing an installer integrity check. The download page has not been updated since 2009 so presumably the program no longer works? Would you know of any safe alternatives? George Chappell

AIt’s true that the last update to Karen’s Directory Printer was some eight years ago. However, we’ve downloaded, installed and tested the program on two different PCS, one running Windows 7 and the other Windows 10, and it works perfectly.

The error message you’re getting suggests that, for whatever reason, the download didn’t complete correctly. So, it’s not that the program won’t work on your current computer but that the installation file is corrupted. The solution should be as simple as downloading it again. You might’ve already tried this but you might not realise that for subsequent attempts the downloaded file’s name will be suffixed with ‘(1)’. So, look for ‘ptdirprn-setup (1).exe’ and double-click that instead of ‘ptdirprn-setup.exe’.

There’s also another trick you can try that requires no software. Press Windows key+e to fire up File Explorer then navigate to the relevant folder. Now press Alt+d to move to the address/path field, type cmd and press Enter. This will open a Command Prompt window straight into the selected folder. Now type dir > filenames.txt and press Enter. A text file called filenames.txt will be created in the selected folder. Now just open this in Notepad to view the files (see screenshot).

?? ?? You can create a text file – filenames.txt – in File Exporer, which makes it easy to look for specific files
