Where’s the Create Map button in Google Maps?

Qi’ve tried to create a sightseeing tour in Google Maps as described in your article (Issue 510, page 58). However, when I click the three horizontal lines, ‘Your places’, then Maps as you describe, there’s no Create Map option. Am I doing something wrong? David Lewis

tested this tip in Chrome, Firefox and Edge, and all three browsers displayed the Create Map option – we’ve highlighted it in the screenshot below in case you’re simply overlooking it. You don’t state whether you’re trying to carry out the tip on your PC or a phone. Our tip is only applicable for a Windows PC, so it won’t work on your phone.

There is a similar, albeit more basic feature in the Google Maps phone app that lets you create an itinerary of places to visit. Open the app, tap the three horizontal lines (top left), ‘Your places’, the Saved tab, then the ‘+’ icon at the bottom right. Name your itinerary, give it a location, then tap the ‘+’ at the bottom right. Next, type the name of the first sight you want to visit in the ‘Add a place’ search bar, then tap the relevant search suggestion. Repeat this process to add further places of interest. To see these on a map, tap the back arrow to return to the Saved tab, then tap your itinerary. Why can’t I add folders to my Talktalk email account? Qyour

tip explaining how to add folders in the Windows 10 Mail app (Issue 511, page 57) doesn’t seem to work with my Talktalk email account. Does it only work with popular email services like Gmail and Outlook? Roy Langford

AWE

suspect the problem here is that you’re using the POP3 email protocol to sync your emails rather than IMAP. To fix this problem try removing your Talktalk email account from the Mail app (don’t worry, you won’t lose any of your emails), then re-adding it using IMAP settings.

To remove your Talktalk account, open the Mail app, click the three horizontal lines (top left), right-click the account, click ‘Account settings’, ‘Remove this account from your device’, then follow the onscreen instructions.

To add it as an IMAP account, click the three horizontal lines (top left), Accounts, then ‘Add account’. In the ‘Choose an account’ pop up window, scroll to the bottom, then click ‘Advanced setup’, followed by ‘Internet email’.

You can find Talktalk’s settings for IMAP at www.snipca.com/25814. Alternatively, simply enter the following information into fields on the ‘Internet email’ page. From the top: – your email address – your email address again – your account password – an account name (optional) – the name you want to appear in the ‘from’ section of your email (optional) – mail.talktalk.net – IMAP4 (in the dropdown menu) – smtp.talktalk.net Now click the ‘Sign in’ button, wait for the Mail app to find your account, then click Done.

Close the Mail app, re-open it, click the three horizontal lines, then the account you’ve just added. Click the Folders icon (just below the three horizontal lines) again, then click the ‘+’ symbol (to the right of ‘All folders’ at the top). Type a name for your folder, then press Enter.

If you don’t see the ‘+’ symbol or you see an error message when trying to add a folder, temporarily add another email account (Gmail, for example) to the Mail app, close and re-open the app, click the newly added account, then go to your Talktalk account. You should find you can now create folders as described above. You can remove the other email account if you want.

How can I fit more videos on my ipad?

Qyour feature on converting old videos (Issue 512, page 50) inspired me to finally get my old VHS tapes on to my PC. I’d like to transfer as many of my videos as possible to my ipad, but its limited storage is a problem. Is there a way to shrink their file size? Brian Drury Ayou

can shrink your video files using free video encoder Handbrake ( www.snipca.com/25805). Open it, click the Open Source button (top left), File, select a video file, then click Open. In the Presets panel, select ipad in the Legacy section (see screenshot above). Then select MP4 in the Container dropdown menu. You can specify a name and save location for the video by clicking Browse in the Destination section. Finally, click the Start Encode button. We were able to shrink a home movie from 105MB to 34MB.
