My lodger got me in trouble with police

The News story in Issue 512 (page 6) about a paedophile using his neighbours’ Wi-fi brought back unwelcome memories for me. A few years ago, I had a lodger who downloaded something that he shouldn’t have. I got the shock of my life when the police knocked at my door, and it took many anxious days before the truth emerged.

It’s a reminder that while we read a lot about the threat of hackers in Russia, North Korea and other unfriendly countries, sometimes the more immediate threat is right under your nose. As you’d expect, I take internet security extremely seriously now, particularly Wi-fi protection. I’m sure you’ll understand why I’ve not used my real name. Alan Jones
